The Big Break

This December, Firefly Music Festival proudly presented “The Big Break” contest- where 15 unsigned musical acts competed for a dream set at one of America’s largest music festivals. From the original 2,500 submissions to the final 15, fans voted each day for the top three contenders- all who competed for the grand prize-a headlining set on The Big Break stage at Firefly 2014.

The top 15 acts met the challenge, and you, the fans, voted each day for your favorite act to play at Firefly. At the end of each day, the band with the lowest number of votes was cut, until the top three winners were chosen. Firefly Music Festival is proud to present the winners of The Big Break- Congratulations to our grand prize winners and to all of the bands who made the top 15. The Woodlands are waiting. We can’t wait for you to join us in June.

What can people expect from your Firefly set?

People can expect an incredibly surprising event of raw energy, soul, and rock; all communicated through our art, and the relationships we share as band mates on the stage. There will be songs of high energy, sing along, community like moments, to songs where new listeners will experience a moment as if it is just them and the world. In the end though, we believe the set will speak for itself.

We all come from different musical influences and backgrounds from Sinatra, Ray Charles, to Irish Folk, to The Rolling Stones, Tupac, and The Pixies. Yet, there is no band in the world quite like the Rolling Stones for their art, legend, and worldly impact. That would be the choice.

First concert as Stop Light Observations was 1 and a half years ago in our hometown Charleston South Carolina, at a battle of the bands at Charleston Beer Works Bar. We won, was a great start.

Breach the Summit

Irvine, California-based indie pop band Breach The Summit features Olen Kittelsen (vocals/drums), Sam Beresford (keyboards/piano) and Jacob Berger (guitar/backing vocals). The broad genre of indie pop that Breach The Summit creates comes from a variety of influences. The three band members all listen to tons of different music and share their new discoveries with each other. They like to think of themselves as a bit of everything – including Two Door Cinema Club, Young The Giant, Foals, Walk The Moon, Death Cab For Cutie, Bastille, Kings Of Leon and Vampire Weekend amongst many more. They released their latest EP “The City” in November 2013. The name The City was actually a working title for You Don’t Know, which Beresford says “is a good representation of the theme of the EP as a whole”. Breach The Summit has had a number of memorable career highlights to date, but one in particular stands out for Beresford. The band played a show last December at the House Of Blues in Anaheim. Along with a few other bands, they came within 100 tickets short of selling out the 1100 capacity venue.

Christian Porter

Christian Porter is your regular all-American guy…but with extraordinaire musical talents. The 22-year-old Pennsylvania native grew up in a very family-oriented atmosphere, with his parents, Lori and Paul Porter, always supportive of their son’s goals. The young singer/songwriter became interested in music after learning to play the piano at a very young age, which helped inspire him to pursue other musical instruments (he also plays the guitar, drums, bass and ukulele) and interests, such as drama. Starring in his first musical in the sixth grade, Christian grew accustomed to the stage and the limelight, traits that would only help fuel his future career.

The success of his music has led to opening gigs for Bo Bice, Thriving Ivory, Dawes, Ryan Cabrera, We The Kings, Gavin Degraw, Kelly Pickler, Avril Lavigne, and Jason Derulo in addition to various gigs at numerous bars, clubs, coffee houses, restaurants and more across the nation.

In May 2012, Christian released his all-new EP, All About You, which consists of five original songs and is now available for purchase on iTunes. Currently, the unsigned artist is looking to expand his career and talents, while providing fans and music lovers with unique sounds that convey truth, realness and passion.

What can people expect from your Firefly set?

People can expect the unexpected, an experience that I was able to experience attending Firefly 2013. After experiencing the festival from an audience point of view, I want to engage my audience in the same way. There were some bands at the festival that I had never heard of before but was hooked within seconds of listening and that’s what I want my audience to experience. You’re not only getting the “typical” drums, bass, guitar and vocal band but the arrangement of sounds from instruments including saxophone, violin, piano, and ukulele. It’s not only a band playing music or even a show; it’s an experience, a movement, a conversation through music. A show of uniqueness and fun.
